TAKE A LEAF OUT OF CHARLES DICKENS’ BOOK

Take some inspiration when writing from “literary genius” Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Charles Dickens wrote fifteen novels in his lifetime but he started out writing, like most authors, unknown and struggling to make a living. He was not paid for his first published work “A Dinner at Poplar Walk” which appeared in the London periodical, The Monthly Magazine in 1833. It was his first attempt at writing at the age of twenty one.

When Charles Dickens began writing “The Pickwick Papers” he was a bachelor and renting a room in Furnival’s Inn, Holborn. He wrote by candlelight in a cold smoky room. He wrote his books by hand with a feather quill pen that would be dipped in ink. The typewriter was not available until around 1868.

Charles Dickens was influenced by many famous people including William Shakespeare and went on to become the most popular novelist of his time. Today he is one of the best known and most read authors.

Charles Dickens’ success didn’t happen overnight so be patient and remember that many of the famous authors started their writing careers much the same as you!
